My teen is headed back to school on Monday! 🥲 I know personally the toll that school (and the related social interactions) can take on a teen’s mental health. So I’ve tried to be hypervigilent with my teen to ensure, I am not missing things. In hopes of helping someone else…

Here are 5 Ways I Support My Teen’s Mental Health:
Back to School Edition 👇🏽

🧠 BOOK THERAPY APPOINTMENTS IN ADVANCE

We Schedule my daughters appointments with her therapist in ADVANCED!

We’ve found the therapist get pretty booked up in the beginning of the school year and then end.

To be proactive we book in advance, that was IF there is a crisis, we already have an appointment. And Bella is able to develop a routine.

🧠 SET A LIST OF 5 GOALS

These can be big to small, but they are goals she wants to fulfill throughout the year.

The we review the list together and if there is one that makes her more anxious not only is SHE on alert, but I am as well.

🧠 RE-ESTABLISH A GOOD SLEEP PATERN

We start having her work/alter her sleep pattern a month before school starts.

Obviously she doesn’t get to sleep early every night - but this helps to get back into a routine and also ensure she is rested.

🧠 CHECK-IN WITH HER GUIDANCE COUNSELOR

Level setting with the guidance counselor and reminding them of who your student is; as well as things they potentially struggled with.

🧠 PUT IN PTO FOR THE FIRST DAY

This is something I am very thankful I am able to do, I understand not everyone can.

But I find this really helps her nerves about the first day, since I am more present than usual AND it soothes my own.

These are just a few things that has helped us over the years, I hope by sharing this will help some of you as well!

Whew…watching this moment back made me tear up 🥹

My prayers when I was younger were SO different from how they are now. I would pray for monetary gain and material things…now, at 33; I pray for a long life and more moments like this with my girls.

God’s will, not my own 🫶🏽 Thankful he gave me what he knew I needed, and not what I thought I wanted.

Things My 13 Year Old Has (That I Did Not):
PART 3 - BEAUTY EDITION 💅🏼

I told y’all in part 1, my teen makes hair and nail contact, before eye contact! I’m kidding…she only does that to me 😂

B, is a very creative person by nature and typically shows that side through her drawings in procreate, houses she builds in Roblox & her nails!

She and I both are always excited to see what type of design she’ll ask for next. We usually begin texting each other ideas a week prior to her appointment!

Here are just a few of my favorite ones she’s had done so far.

@bibinstanails is the QUEEN of nails who keeps Bella (and me when I wear them) looking sharp!

And YES, she does take breaks and allow her nails to breathe, before y’all ask 🫶🏽

Prior to having my youngest in January 2023, I had numerous friends/family tell me:

1️⃣ The second pregnancy is usually easier, because you know what to expect
2️⃣ The second child is easier than the first

…I am here to report they LIED to me! 🤣 When I posted that to my IG stories, my community flooded my DMs; most saying my friends were not my friend and lied like a rug 😂🤣

My second pregnancy literally almost took me out from:
👉🏽 Having to give myself insulin shots twice a day due to gestational diabetes
👉🏽 Having a transverse breached baby at 38 weeks (she’d been like that since I think 30 weeks)
👉🏽 Extreme pain from swelling
👉🏽 An emergency c-section + hemorrhaging

…to now having a mini hellion who is my husbands twin in looks and my twin in temperament 🫣

I feel confident saying MY second pregnancy nor this second baby is easy! 😅 Worth it yes, easy no!

Life Lately Photo Dump 📸

My days lately have consisted of A LOT of prayer, therapy and good food, many @traderjoes runs, mommy + daughter date nights with Bella and celebrating big and small wins.

Biggest Highlights:

⭐️ I WON my battle with postpartum depression (after tons prayer, therapy, medicine and help) and am finally begin to feel like myself again (just a healthier version)

⭐️ Baby Coco turned 6 months old and is all but crawling

⭐️ Bella is OFFICIALLY a teenager and goes to high school in a year…I am not okay

⭐️ Jesse and I celebrated 4 years of marriage…after 3 failed engagements, I truly understand why God made me wait…and boooy did I learn in my last season of waiting (pre-Jesse)

⭐️ I finally accepted that my body has changed (for the better) since having Coco and am getting more comfortable in my skin

Annnnd…
⭐️ I hit 100k on @tiktok … I was NOT expecting 10k, let alone 100k in 6 weeks 🥹

Life definitely has not gotten less complicated becoming a mom of 2, leaning into this new version of myself, being a supportive wife…but with every facet and messy moment there is ALWAYS a silver lining. And that is simply that I’ve been given more than I deserve 🫶🏽

I grew up in the “you are fine, you’re just tired” and “we don’t talk about mental health era”…But I promised myself (and my girls) they would NOT.

Few things that make this a successful strategy in our house:
🧠 This is not everyday, or even every week
🧠 I still teach her the importance of persevering
🧠 We make sure to call her therapist AND guidance counselor
🧠 Any missed school work is completed in the same week, the day of school was missed

Here’s to protecting our kids mental health 🫶🏽
